Why would I want to know my BMI?
Say you are making some lifestyle changes. You are trying to lose weight for example, or you want to gain some weight. Tracking your BMI gives you a nice and clear overview of your progress. But also just a quick check to find out if you need to change anything at all is useful.
Facts about BMI
Your BMI is calculated by taking your weight in kilograms (kg) and dividing this by your height in centimeters (cm) squared. As a formula this becomes: BMI = Weight / Height².
However, we also do a little more. We provide an indication of whether your BMI is healthy by showing your BMI value on a scale of BMI values.
Healthy BMI ranges by age and gender are taken from the CDC website.
Should I worry about my BMI?
Although your BMI value and your place on the BMI scale are powerful indicators, they don’t tell you everything about your health. In the following situations you may take your BMI reading with a grain of salt:
- Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- If you try to calculate the BMI for a less than 2 year old infant
- If you are an athlete with a lot of muscle mass
Last but not least, if you are in any way worried about your weight or the weight of your child, always contact your physician.
